| This is a kind of biased poll. My answer can't be definite, only a guess, I'm British born and bred.
I would've said English, but I'm sure there's more to it than that. | 14-12-2007 00:57 itsLauren |

| No,as a multicultural country there is none,though there should be;English. | 14-12-2007 01:08 AnkhWL | 10 posts
| No, there isn't. I'm Canadian and even I know that.
However, I did read a comic lately on this subject having to deal with someone spouting out that everyone they know should learn English because its the "language of the land" (meaning original) in America. Too bad it isn't. (hint: These people came here well over seven thousand years ago) | 14-12-2007 01:11 zjenn4 |

| not officially.
And if we did, could we technically call it (speaking) "American" only because although what i speak is very similar to what our friends in the UK and such speak, there are several differences between out English variations. Dunno, just a thought.
I don't think it really matters because the US is such a melting pot of everything. | 14-12-2007 01:36 Flavia89 | 30 posts
| Why do north american ppl reffer to the US as America? that's wrong, America is the whole continent not only the US | 14-12-2007 01:44 Mr_Pie_Guy_69 | 2,152 posts
| I'm not american, and i dont care much for america.... so i dont give a rats ass | 14-12-2007 01:46 BlooFluff | 21 posts
| we refer to is as America because its the US of A and it's just easier, and besides, most people know what we mean. As for the poll I would say that the languages most commonly spoken in the US are English and Spanish... but I think French is high up too. I think that everyone who lives in the US should speak english for two reasons: 1. It's convenient, and 2. It helps people not born in the country to integrate with far more ease. Personally I think we should have better integration programs... I mean do we even have any? It would just make things a lot easier. Than again, I'm not that well informed so... it could be better than I think it is. | 14-12-2007 02:02 swmmng | 120 posts
| Why is this even a question? It's a fact; no official language. | 14-12-2007 02:09 rotciv_00 |

| uhm... i guess it does... its english right?... even do english comes from UK and it is not the only langauge spoken in the US, the english spoken in US is different from the one spoken in UK, Australia or Canada...
the same way as spanish is the official language in America (and i mean America THE CONTINENT), mexican spanish is not the same as colombian spanish or peruan spanish...
so yeah, every country has its own official language, even US | 14-12-2007 02:13 JDolla |

| ok as a bit of clarificarion: official does not mean "spoken the most" it means legally the only language used for official buisness. even though the U.S uses english for all official documents and whatnot, there's no law requireing such. thus there is no official language | 14-12-2007 02:55 trrito |

| First let's clear this up, there is no 'official language' English is the most common language, but Spanish is a close second.
Secondly... 'American' is not a language. The differences in the syntax and slang between American and British English are not enough to denote a separate language, you can call it a dialect if you must, but they are the same language.
The brits put subjects and verbs in a different order than we do in certain phrases, but overall the language is the same. 'Standard English' is the same here as it is in Britain.
As for my opinion.. I frankly don't care what we do as our official language, I already speak #1 and #2. |
