Originally, the characters on the typewriters he invented were arranged alphabetically, set on the end of a metal bar which struck the paper when its key was pressed. However, once an operator had learned to type at speed, the bars attached to letters that lay close together on the keyboard became entangled with one another, forcing the typist to manually unstick the typebars, and also frequently blotting the document. [1] Sholes solved the jamming problem by rearranging the the keys. A disputed issue is the effect this rearrangement of letters had on maximum typing speed.

The keys are arrainged this way to slow typists down. Sounds strange, but the early typewritters would get jammed if you typed too fast. Alphabetical order would increase the speed that we can type. We haven't changed because the transition would be to difficult.

okay, i KNOW we already had this one. thats the only reason i know why (why the keys aren alphabetical on a keyboard)

something to do with typewriters jamming because the keys got ht too quickly because they were in order, so they were changed around so typewriters wouldnt get broken etc.

I knew at one point and time but i couldn't remember...and this isn't very common knowledge so i can see a lot of people not knowing it.

This poll was done before, wasn't it?
And, as I said before, I heard that the reason for the keys not to be alphabetically placed is that the position in which they are in the current keyboard model takes into consideration the frequence that certain letters are used (for example, "q" is not frequently used, so it's located in the extreme up and left position of the keyboard). Therefore, this arrangement makes it easier for people to type fast.

Yup, we learned about it in school for some reason. It goes back to the early typewriter days when the ABCD method was in place but didn't work as well and so they had to change it and it just sort of stayed the same for now with the computer keyboards.

If they were alphabetically placed there was no way you could type quickly. At least it's what I always thought.
