#30, in the right place at the right time, but wasn't trying.

No idea how many chords there are, but I hope to learn the guitar soon.

Doesn't it depend on what key you tune the guitar in, in the first place? If you're good enough it could probably be near to infinite.

For this is not a very intelligent question, the amount of chords that can be built/played on a guitar are almost endless. Anybody with a basic knowledge of Music Theory would know. Me being a Jazz guitar player of 24 years who went to Berklee school of music in boston can't even tell you how many combinations there are. lol.

Whats that tell ya??? lol.

YEah, you can't really know how many chords you can play. You can now a certian amount of notes, but you can play soooo many different chords in different tuning.

there is a specific number but it's rather high. I could figure it out if I had a guitar to look at.

I think that there are really only seven main chords but there are hundreds of variations of them.

As there are thousands of variations and minor tweaks, and many tunings, almost impossible to put that to a number.

Okay wow. First of all, as the music student said, there are a virtually endless amount chords. but it's not really about tuning. There are things beyond just bar chords out there- you can make a variation on anything. There aren't 7 basic ones, but 12 basic major chords. Also, any two or more notes you hit on a guitar is a chord, you just have to know how to name it- even if its completely atonal. You could not figure it out by looking at it....unelss you go into permutations and....
